Enraged villagers Overrun a Police Patrol Base in Murang’a
Yesterday was a rowdy day in Gachocho, Kigumo Sub County. Gen Z and millennials overpowered the police, broke into Gachocho Police Patrol Base and mauled a murder suspect in custody and stoned him to death.
The deceased killed their firstborn sibling on Monday night over land. They committed the gruesome act together with his brother who managed to escape and took himself to Kahuro Police Station where he was arrested.
The fracas started early yesterday morning after the neighbours alerted the villagers. A rowdy mob attacked the duo but the youngest of the three managed to escape.
“The escaped brother-in-law hit and cut my husband with a jembe on the head and the killed man here beat him up with a big stick. I tried to save him but this man cut my forehead,” Mrs Kibugu, wife of the murdered man said. Mr Kibugu was a pastor.
The suspect ran into Gachocho Police Post where the furious mob followed in hot pursuit.
The mob, baying for his blood requested the police to release the suspect. They blocked Nyokanyoka Road as more police reinforcement were sent from Muthithi, Kigumo and Kahuro Police Stations.
“These police officers in Gachocho have been doing nothing to protect the citizens here, we’re very angry at them,” a correspondent who wanted to remain anonymous said.
The police shot teargas and bullets into the air, trying to disperse the mob until they were out. Stones then started flying into the police post until the police were overpowered.
The mob then broke into the post and took the man from the police cell and stoned him to death.
“Gen Z we’re very happy and now feel that justice has been done. He has been terrorising us for long, even beating his father. He shall be buried in our family land over my dead body,” said the mother of the killed man.
The lynched man was a giant in figure and strength and allegedly used to fight other people when he got drunk. They killed him over a dispute on a piece of land.
“We’re very sad that this has happened. We ask the citizens to stop taking justice into their own hands and let the government handle insecurity matters,” Mr. Benson Kimata, Kigumo ACC 1 said.
He said that the police were overpowered because hundreds of people surrounded the police post, which sits on a hill in KENHA land. There’s a pending court case already seeking to stop the relocation of the police post to a more strategic position.
Kigumo MCA Hon Caroline Njoroge also rushed to the site. She fought hard trying to convince the rowdy youth from committing the act to no avail.
“We’re shocked. People should stop resolving to murder to solve problems, instead, they should seek other peaceful means. Let us let the police to handle such cases as this when such atrocities happen.” Hon Caroline Njoroge said.
The mob wanted to take the body and bury it immediately but Kigumo ACC1, Kigumo OCPD Mr Kiprono, Hon Caroline Njoroge, Kigumo Chief and Gachocho Assistant Chief managed to convince the mob to let the police handle the rest.
The mob also destroyed two police vehicles during the fracas.
“Now that the suspect is dead, please allow the police to take over the matter from there and take the body to the morgue,” Hon Caroline added.
Both left their wives widowed and children without a father.
The bodies were taken to Muriranjas Hospital Mortuary.
