Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero shows the way and leads in Nairobi clean up along Kenyatta Avenue.
The Nairobi County Government Thursday kicked-off a massive clean-up exercise of the city with the launch of over 40 garbage collection trucks.
The vehicles will now be distributed to each ward to ensure the daily collection of garbage following outrage from residents over mounting heaps of garbage in the city.

Kidero’s tenure (2013–2017) was marked by significant public criticism over waste management issues in Nairobi, including the accumulation of garbage in various parts of the city.
In contrast, current Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has actively led cleanup initiatives. For instance, on January 13, 2025, he spearheaded a night-long cleaning exercise in the Central Business District, involving over 3,500 members of the Green Army.
This effort aimed to restore cleanliness and promote a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.
Additionally, on August 24, 2024, the Nairobi County government organized a major cleanup drive in the CBD and surrounding areas, focusing on activities like sweeping, litter collection, drain cleaning, and vegetation management.
This initiative was part of a broader effort to instill a sense of collective responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.
While Kidero’s administration faced challenges in waste management, current leadership under Governor Sakaja is actively working to address these issues and improve the city’s cleanliness.
