Orange Democratic Movement ( ODM) officials from Migori County have told youthful parliamentarians from Nyanza to stop interfering with the party’s top leadership.
The leaders led by the county chairperson Philip Makabong’o, the county coordinator David Ottawa and Rongo sub-branch secretary Gilbert Obuya said theMPs who were agitating for change of national leadership of the party were sowing seeds of discord among members.
The leaders demanded an apology from the legislators whom they accused of having selfish interests.
“We are very concerned about the kind of interference from the ambitious youth who are bound to break the party’s unity due to their selfish desires to take over the mantle of leading the party,” said Mr Makabong’o.
They alleged the MPs were being used by rival political parties to undermine operations of the main opposition party in parliament.
“All the leaders we have at the national office were duly elected by the people and there is no reason why a few people should start agitating for change of party leadership when they can wait for party elections to democratically dethrone them?” posed Mr Ottawa.
The local party leaders made the sentiments a week after a section of young MPs from Nyanza region hinted on a plot to have current party leaders ousted.
Legislators Ken Obura (Kisumu Central), Millie Odhiambo (Mbita), Agostino Netto (Ndhiwa) and theODM party think-tank Larry Gumbe were quoted as saying the party required new leadership ideas to win in the next general elections.
Amongst the top ODM leaders targeted are the national chairperson Henry Kosgey and Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o.
