Word of the Day: Forgiving our debtors

Word of the Day: Forgiving our debtors

Someone once said that there is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love. How true these words are! But how many times when wronged have we come up with a thousand reasons as to why we shouldnโ€™t forgive? We have all sorts of excuses from, โ€˜They need to learn a lessonโ€™ or โ€˜itโ€™s not up to me to make the first move.โ€™

However, Christ expects us to forgive. In the book of Mark, Jesus tells us that if we have anything against anyone, we should forgive them so that our Father in heaven may also forgive us our trespasses. In addition to this there are some more reasons as to why we should forgive. First, forgiveness halts the cycle of blame and pain. Without forgiveness we remain bound to the people we canโ€™t forgive held in their grip.

Another reason for forgiveness is that it loosens the hold of guilt in the offender thus it allows the possibility of transformation in their life. Finally, forgiveness creates a remarkable linkage between the forgiver and the wrong doer. Therefore, today letโ€™s let go of any hurt or pain caused by others in our lives and forgive from the heart because he who cannot forgive others burns the bridge over which he himself must pass.

” Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.โ€
Mathew 6:12
