Kenya’s resolve to look elsewhere in to salvage an ailing tourism industry has turned to Nigeria in the hope to woo potential visitors. Cabinet Secretary for East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism Phyllis Kandie has led a delegation of the sector’s stakeholders including the Kenya Tourist Board and private players on a three-day mission to market the country.
The delegation will meet with their Nigerian travel and trade counterparts in Lagos and Abuja. โAs we embrace intra-Africa tourism, West Africa is one of the regions that we seek to tap into. We believe the market has people of high net-worth with a willingness to spend,” Kandie said in a statement.
KTB’s managing director Muriithi Ndegwa said over 100 travel agents in Nigeria have been trained to equip them with information on Kenya’s tourism products.
In the continent, South Africa is the leading source of tourists to Kenya after Uganda with 40,000 arrivals last year, according to data from the ministry.
