Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua Challenges Opposition Leaders to Focus on Development

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has challenged opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka to use their international connections and global influence to attract foreign investment and development funding to Kenya instead of engaging in endless political battles.

Speaking at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Changamwe, Mombasa County, Mutua said Kenyan leaders should prioritize economic empowerment, job creation, and poverty reduction, especially for struggling youth and marginalized communities.

The governor was accompanied by several leaders, including Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka, Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi, Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka, and former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile.

Leaders Urged to Prioritize Development Over Politics

According to Mutua, Kenyan citizens are increasingly frustrated by leaders who focus on political alliances and tribal coalitions while ignoring critical development projects that directly impact ordinary wananchi.

“I urge my brothers Raila and Kalonzo to bring in money for development instead of dwelling on endless politicking,” Mutua stated during the church gathering.

The governor criticized the trend where politicians negotiate for government positions during election periods without demanding meaningful projects for their communities.

“Every time elections are around the corner, our leaders form coalitions based on tribes. Each of them bargains for a position for themselves in government, with none asking for a project for their community,” Mutua said.

Kenyan Youth Need Jobs and Opportunities

Mutua emphasized that millions of unemployed Kenyan youths are desperate for economic opportunities rather than political rhetoric. He noted that the country’s leadership should focus on attracting foreign investors, improving infrastructure, and creating employment opportunities.

“Kenyans want leaders who bring roads, water, and employ youths,” he added.

The remarks come at a time when many Kenyans, including those in the diaspora, are increasingly demanding accountability, economic reforms, and sustainable development initiatives that can improve livelihoods across the country.

Diaspora Networks Seen as Key to Economic Growth

The discussion around international networks and foreign funding resonates strongly with the Kenyan diaspora community, many of whom continue to contribute billions of shillings annually through remittances and investments.

Political leaders with global connections have often been encouraged to leverage their international influence to attract investors, development partnerships, and infrastructure financing that can boost Kenya’s economy.

Diaspora professionals and investors have also repeatedly called on Kenyan leaders to shift focus from divisive politics to economic empowerment, youth employment, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

Calls for Political Tolerance

Mutua and the accompanying leaders also urged politicians to respect differing opinions and embrace tolerance as the country continues preparing for future elections.

The leaders warned that excessive political confrontations risk slowing down development and discouraging investors who are critical to Kenya’s economic growth.

As political realignments continue to shape Kenya’s landscape, the debate over development versus politics remains a major issue among wananchi both at home and abroad.
