IEBC appoints Ezra Simiyu as new CEO

chiloba120115NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 12 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appointed Ezra Chiloba Simiyu as the Secretary and CEO to replace James Oswago.

The announcement was made on Monday night following a rigorous recruitment exercise by a consulting company.

“Following a thorough recruitment process the IEBC has today, 12 January 2015 appointed Mr EZRA CHILOBA SIMIYU as the Commission Secretary/CEO of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) having emerged as the most successful candidate in the interviews,” the commission chairman Issack Hassan said in a statement.

Simiyu has been serving as the Deputy Team Leader, DAI (Drivers of Accountability). He has previously served as Governance Analyst/Project Manager for UNDP Kenya.

He holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy from the Central European University and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and is a senior fellow at the Policy House and a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Chiloba was picked from a shortlist of four candidates who include the commission’s acting CEO Beatrice Nyabuto, Dickson Omondi of the National Democratic Institute and Erastus Ethekon of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Simiyu replaces Oswago whose term ended.

He is however, battling charges of irregular procurement process in purchasing electoral materials for the 2013 general elections.
