JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Heavy smoke billowed from a fire at a Northside motel that injured two people Saturday morning, Jacksonville Fire Rescue said.

Firefighters said the fire started just before 5:30 a.m. on the ground floor of the Metro Inn and Suites on Golfair Boulevard, just off Interstate 95.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue spokesperson Tom Francis told News4Jax that it took 30 minutes to evacuate everyone from the hotel.

The virus originated in China and spread to Europe, with Italy and Spain quickly emerging as hot spots. Nonessential travel across the U.S.-Mexico border has also been restricted, โ€œmostly, and even beyond, but mostly during this global pandemic,โ€ Trump said. Those restrictions are the same as the ones the administration implemented for the Canadian border last month. The rules allow for essential travel, such as travel for trade purposes,

One of the two men injured in the fire was treated at the scene and the other,ย John Magolo, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Magoloย is a homeless Kenyan immigrant who said he was passing through Jacksonville. He said he was trapped inside as smoke began to fill the motel.

“I couldn’t get out,” Magoloย said. “I was dying. I was, like, ‘This is it. My life is done.’ The fire marshalย had to come out. They broke the door. They broke the window. I had to come out.”

Magoloย said he’s been travelingย with a homeless couple since Christmas, and that they’veย formed a bond through theirย travels. He said they watch each other’s backs.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority offered buses so the displaced guests could get out of the cold, and the American Red Cross offered supplies while the motel tries to find vacantย rooms in the undamaged wing.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
