Kenya Village Voices: A Controversial Parenting Perspective

Organizations such as Save the Children and World Vision and others have a philosophy of no child labor. This philosophy is shared by many other organizations that believe Africans should not use their children for any kind of labor. In the context of child-rearing, ‘Kenya Village Voices: A Controversial Perspective’ adds a unique view to the discussion.

They should buy them computer games. They should also talk to them rationally instead of using the kiboko. Women in my village, however, are not so agreeable with this kind of thinking. For them, child labor is a means of instructing. It results in well-groomed children who are ready to deal with the world of mud, dirt, and wild animals. Wonderful and polite American born 18-year-olds brought up in the constraints of a culture that allows parents to piga matako of their children when they disobey or misbehave.

My elder sisters punished us for even looking at them in a funny way! Seriously, we were so disciplined that dinner at our table of 12 was a line-up. There was no room for utoto. When you ship your children to the village, they will come to the United States for college, disciplined! I know parents like to possess their children, “I can’t live without my baby.”

But honestly their purpose on earth is to be formed towards Divine mercy and grace. This should be within the celebration of God’s eternal bliss. They should not be transformed into the image of some crazy short-haired girl with pink hair who claims that St. Paul is sexist.

The children who are growing up in western countries are better off walking to the shops to buy unga and mafuta ya kupima. The idea that we can have disciplined conservative Christian children in a culture is denying girls the right to be called girls and boys the right to be called boys. This is cultural madness, as some might say. Meanwhile, Kenya village voices serve as a controversial counterpart.

Parents in the Diaspora should adopt the philosophy of distance childrearing. They should ship the children to Jamhuri immediately after they stop suckling. This is, of course, if women are still allowed suckling of children. This way, we are not going to have a generation of Diaspora crazies. These are individuals who tell their parents that they are girls when they clearly have male organs.

Someone may say, “Do what I say but not what I do?” I say no, do what I do. I took my white Anglo Saxon young man to the village for two years. Now he is a military medical officer and a gentleman. Thanks to the village mud, dirt, wild animals, and sukuma wiki with a touch of village discipline from my late wonderful parents. These elements echo the impact of Kenya Village Voices.
