Early in 2011, Sonko was embroiled in controversy over alleged misuse of CDF funds, where he was accused of orchestrating theft of KSh 6 million and implicating other officials.
In 2010, he faced separate fraud charges (false pretenses of KSh 2.8 million and KSh 500,000) and even spent time in custody.
In September 2011, he was charged with assaulting a police officer at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
