The body of a missing Kenyan orphan is believed to have been found on a beach on the New South Wales far north coast.
Samuel Macharia, 16, failed to return home from an afternoon run and swim at Cabarita beach on Sunday.
Police were contacted later that night after family members discovered a backpack containing Samuel’s clothes and mobile phone on the beach.
A teenage boy’s body was found on the beach at Cabarita, just north of Salt, about 6.15am (AEDT) today.
“The body is yet to be formally identified but we do believe it to be that of a Kenyan teenager reported missing earlier in the week,” a police spokeswoman said.
Samuel, a student from Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in Tweed Heads, came to Australia in 2007 on a cultural exchange program after being discovered playing soccer in the slums of Nairobi.
He was just three days away from his Year 10 graduation.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
