Former Turkana South MP Francis Ewaton Tuesday shot dead his wife before turning the gun on himself at his rural home.
Rift Valley Provincial police boss John M’Mbijjiwe confirmed the incident, saying he had just arrived at the late former MP’s home and would be giving further details.
“I can confirm the former MP shot dead the wife and also shot himself with the same weapon,” he said on the telephone.
M’Mbijjiwe said there were many people at the home, as he made his way to join other officers investigating the incident.

More Details
Francis Ewaton Achuka was a Kenyan politician who served as the Member of Parliament for Turkana South from 1992 to 2007, representing the Kenya African National Union (KANU). He was succeeded by Josephat Nanok of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the 2007 general election.
Ewaton’s tenure in Parliament was marked by his advocacy for the development and security of his community.
He was known for his straightforwardness and occasional controversies, such as his resignation from the House Catering Committee in 2006, citing that the committee’s focus on kitchen matters was culturally inappropriate for a Turkana man.
Tragically, on August 7, 2012, Ewaton died in a suspected murder-suicide at his home in Lokichar, Turkana County. According to police reports, he allegedly killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
Both bodies were found with bullet wounds, and a firearm believed to be Ewaton’s was recovered at the scene. The motive for the incident was not immediately clear, but it was reported that Ewaton had been ill for some time, suffering from ulcers and high blood pressure.
Ewaton’s death was met with shock and sadness in his community. Area MP Josephat Nanok described him as a patriot and a good leader who prioritized the interests of his community. Neighbors and friends remembered him as a kind-hearted man who loved helping others
