The tongue is one of the smallest organs yet through it a nation is ruled, an animal is tamed and a person is encouraged. However, we need to learn how to tame our tongues because one can end up saying a careless or cruel word that can destroy friendships that had been built over years, burning bridges that would propel one to higher levels. The list is endless.
Many times we sin without being aware that we are sinning especially with the tongue. We are often guilty of committing sins that sometimes we easily brush off. Sometimes we find ourselves gossiping, slandering yet the Bible is clear in the importance of guarding ones lips.
Therefore, everytime you are about to speak remember your credibility is at stake because your words describe who you truly are and what company you keep. James is quite clear on how we should speak as he says in James 1:19 โMy dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angryโ. Indeed let your words be character-building; that way you will leave people better off than you found them.
