NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 3 – The University of Nairobi (UoN) has confirmed that lawyer Kethi Kilonzo does not hold a Masters degree in Law from their institution as she has not completed her course work.
UoN’s Vice Chancellor George Magoa said Kethi had failed to re-sit her Legal Research and Methodology paper after failing it and could therefore not have been awarded a Master’s degree.
“Upon failing to satisfy the examiners and pursuant to her own request for remark in one paper GPR 602 – Legal Research and Methodology paper, the student was advised to re-sit the paper in question in the examination scheduled for February 2012. Ms Kilonzo is yet to re-sit the paper and as such continues to be a student,” Magoha said in response to an inquiry by lawyer Alphonce Mutinda.
Mutinda had raised the query on behalf of the Jubilee Alliance which claims Kethi had a trend of falsifying documents, after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) found that she was not a registered voter despite her insistence that she is.
The IEBC Nomination Disputes Resolution committee also learnt that the voter registration slip Kethi had in her possession was one of six stolen from a booklet used to register only former President Mwai Kibaki.
“It is our contention, as well as a matter of public interest, that Ms Kilonzo has a consistent trend of falsifying documents and obtaining documents, qualifications and/or clearances though untoward means,” Mutinda wrote in his letter of inquiry to the institute of higher learning.
Mutinda based his inquiry on the provisions of Article 35(1) (b) of the Constitution which states: “Every citizen has the right of access to information held by the State; and information held by another person and required for the exercise or protection of any right or fundamental freedom.”
The revelations could not come at a worse time for Kethi who faces criminal charges on Tuesday for the theft of the voter registration slip and further erodes the favourable public opinion she accrued when she appeared before the Supreme Court during the presidential petition.
Kethi has on numerous occasions described herself as a brilliant lawyer and failed to correct the impression that she possesses a Masters degree in Law from the University of Nairobi.
Only two months ago, Kethi received numerous accolades for her legal prowess from members of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy – of which she is a member.
On the occasion of her unveiling as the Wiper candidate for the then vacant Makueni Senate seat former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka said, “She has challenged me to get my Masters degree in Law. I was a lawyer before she was and yet she’s ahead of me now.”
“I want to ask Senator James Orengo to ensure she joins the Upper House’s Legal Committee due to her brilliant mind.”
