Somalia’s Al-Shabaab claim they ‘control presidential palace

Somalia’s Islamist Al-shabaab rebels said Tuesday they had taken control of the office of the country’s internationally-backed president following a major assault on the presidential palace.

“Our commandos are inside the so-called presidential office,” Shebab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab told AFP. “We are in control of the headquarters of the apostate regime.”

However, security sources said that Somalia’s internationally-backed president was safe and was not inside the presidential palace when the Islamist militants launched an attack on the presidential palace complex.

The sources added that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was unharmed and safe with guards from the African Union’s 22,000-strong AMISOM force.
