Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has sued Cord coalition leaders for contempt of court over alleged inflammatory remarks they made at Uhuru Park during the July 7 Saba Saba rally.

Mr Sonko wants Senators James Orengo, Johnstone Muthama, Otieno Kajwang and Elizabeth Ongoro and politician Reuben Ndolo jailed for six months or pay a fine of Sh2 million each for disobeying the binding court orders that had gagged them against such remarks.

The senator alleges that the Cord leaders made defamatory remarks against President Uhuru Kenyatta during the rally that can be deemed inflammatory and inciting to the public.

He told Justice Isaac Lenaola that the leaders went against the spirit of the consent they signed two days before the rally in which they agreed to exercise restraint.

โ€œThey uttered defamatory statements during the public meeting which were captured on national television,โ€ the senator said.

Senator Sonko has attached to his filing DVD extracts of the alleged defamatory statements he said the leaders made during the Saba Saba rally.

The judge certified the matter as urgent and directed that the cited parties be served for a full hearing on Monday.
