In a press statement, Ms Williams said she had launched an online campaign Join My Village (JMV), a charitable partnership between CARE, Merck and General Mills whereby she will contribute Sh2.2 million. Accompanying the contribution from Venus Williams is a challenge to her fans, whom she is calling on to help unlock the Sh2.2 million pledge. When they โLikeโ JMV content on Facebook, or โre-tweetโ JMV content on Twitter, USD1 is unlocked โ up to the full pledge by Ms Williams during the two-week campaign.
The campaign aims to raise up to Ksh 6.6 million.
It appears the star has a soft spot for Kenya having already set up a girls secondary school in Machakos county and a tennis training programme for children in Kibera slums.
