I have often asked myself the question, โWhat would I ask for if I found myself in the same position King Solomon did those many years ago?โWould I ask for money or fame or would I ask for wisdom like he did?
Because we know Solomonโs story and how the Lord responded, it might be easy to say that we would ask for wisdom like Solomon did because we know the Lord was pleased with that, but in reality would we do that?
With all the pressures of life that I may be going through right now especially with the high cost of living, I may end up asking for the wrong thing, something that is short term.
When I look at Solomonโs choice, three things jump out to me:
1: He understood his position was ordained by God and so he asked for something that was in line with his God given purpose. To be a good king he needed wisdom. His father David had set a high standard for him and there was no way Solomon would match or surpass it without Gods wisdom.
2: He did not ask with a selfish motive but rather he asked for something that would benefit the whole kingdom. He was not consumed with himself as king, but rather he was consumed with the people and how he could be the best king to them.
3: His choice was focused on pleasing God. So, back to the question again, what would you ask for?
A better job?
A bigger house?
To win the lottery?
A tall dark and handsome man to marry you?
The destruction of all your enemies?
The reality is that we have that same kind of opportunity every day. John 15:16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
The sad truth is that many of us do not receive what we ask for because our motives are selfish. Is my asking connected to producing lasting fruit? If it is then the Father will give us what we ask for in the name of Jesus.
James 4:2-3 (2) Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (3) You ask and do not receive, because you ask a miss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Ask in His will and you will hit the mark all the time every time!
1 Kings 3:5,9
(5) That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, โWhat do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!โ (9) Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?โ
