Mugo Karuga, the GSU officer who used to drive Uhuru Kenyatta, his brother Muhoho and sister Nyokabi from Gatundu to St Mary’s School, Nairobi in a limousine recalls a time children from a school came to Gatundu barefoot to entertain Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
โAs the children embarked in a mass choir to entertain the president, Uhuru removed his shoes and joined them,โ he said.
Karuga said the president ordered him to take the children to the nearest Bata shop afterwards, where they were each bought a pair of shoes.
โHad Uhuru not done what he did, perhaps his father would not have seen the need to have the children who had entertained him be fitted with shoes to avoid walking bare in future,โ he said.
