Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has disbanded his rescue team in a bid to join forces with Governor Evans Kidero and improve lives.

Sonko said he will donate all of the team’s vehicles, which include a Land Cruiser, Limousine, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a Hummer, to the county government.

The team launched in January offered Nairobi residents services including ambulance, hearse, breakdown, wedding transport, water, security and emergency response.

Speaking during his father, Gideon Kivanguli’s burial on Tuesday, the Senator promised to put an end to confrontational politics.

“My father had arranged a reconciliation meeting with the Governor’s parents, which never happened due to his demise,” he said.

“I always told him I was doing my oversight role as Senator and that it was nothing personal, but he insisted it had to end for public good.”

Sonko said he would like the Governor to work closely with him and involve him in all development projects.

Noting that his father’s death reignited humility and the need to help the poor, he said the country’s biggest problem is leaders who disrespect each other.

“If leaders give each other the respect required, we can do great things for the people who rely on us,” he said.

Sonko said he learned the ropes from his father, whom he said was a successful land agent at the Coast while he was a student.

“I made my first land deal in high school and made money. I have never looked back; my dad made me what I am,” he said.

“Though he tried his hand in politics but did not make it, he remains my hero.”

Kivanguli’s cortege, that included Sonko’s gold-plated Land Cruiser, was spotted on Mombasa Road in the morning.

It comprised several vehicles and motorcycles, and caused traffic along the road, as his father’s body was transported in a coffin facelifted with gold and diamond parts.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and other government officials attended Kivanguli’s burial at the Sonko family’s lavish home in Mua Hills, Machakos county.

Last week, Uhuru eulogised Kivanguli as “a humble, kind, generous and courageous elder” who was “a good and inspiring businessman”.

Kidero and county executives had also condoled with Sonko on a visit to his home in Runda last week.

The governor had said the county would support Sonko to ensure his father was accorded a decent send-off.
