Jubilee names 11-member team on IEBC

CECILY MbarireThe Jubilee coalition has named an 11-member team to form a select committee on resolving a stalemate over the future of the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The group includes senators Kiraitu Murungi, Kipchumba Murkomen, Beatrice Elachi and Fatuma Dullo, and National Assembly lawmakers Cecily Mbarire, Naomi Shabaan, Moses Kuria, Jimmy Angwenyi, Benjamin Washiali, Mohammed Mahmoud and Soipan Tuya.

The team leader is Mr Murungi, the Meru Senator.

The appointment of a joint team follows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s announcement on Wednesday that a panel would be formed to settle the IEBC impasse.

President Kenyatta’s decision came in the wake of weekly protests by the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) seeking a dialogue on the future of the electoral body.

Several people have died and property has been destroyed in the chaos and violence that accompanied the demonstrations.

A statement from National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale said the Jubilee team will have 30 days to report back to Parliament.

“The above term-limit is given by our determination not to interfere with the date of the 2017 general election,” the statement said.

The Jubilee parliamentary group also resolved to hold a retreat within a week to harmonise their position with two other House committees that were already on the matter on the issues to be submitted to the Joint Select Committee.
