Vogue magazine followed Lupita Nyong’o to Kenya for its October 2016 issue, capturing her in her family’s village in Kisumu County.

The cover story, photographed by Mario Testino, celebrated Nyong’o’s heritage and her role in the film Queen of Katwe.

The shoot featured her dancing with fellow Luo women at Kit Mikayi, walking along Dunga Beach near Lake Victoria, and spending time with her 96-year-old grandmother, Dorca.

In the accompanying interview, Nyong’o discussed her commitment to diversifying African representation in Hollywood and her desire to create opportunities for people of color.

She also reflected on her upbringing in Kenya and the importance of using her platform to change narratives around African identity.

Additionally, during her visit, Nyong’o learned to cook ugali, a traditional Kenyan dish, under her mother’s guidance. This moment was particularly meaningful, as she had previously admitted not knowing how to prepare it.
