Chief Justice David Maraga has today held talks with CORD principals.
The CJ met Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula at the Supreme Court in a bid to rebuild confidence in the Judiciary ahead of next year’s polls.
The Opposition had a rocky relationship with the Judiciary during Maraga’s predecessor Willy Mutunga’s reign, having suffered a credibility crisis after the 2013 disputed presidential polls and the row over judges’ retirement age.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) principals on Tuesday held a closed door meeting with newly-appointed Chief Justice David Maraga to discuss among other issues next year’s elections and the need for judicial reforms.
Addressing the press after the meeting, CJ Maraga said that the visit by CORD principals signifies a genuine interest by the leaders and the Judiciary to create and support institutions.
“This is also a trump of the principle of dialogue that underpins our Constitution. Significantly, it is also a recognition that the task of winning and building public confidence in public institutions is a responsibility we all bear,” stated Maraga.
“I have shared my vision for the judiciary; committed to continuing to pursue the transformation agenda started by my predecessor, Hon Dr Willy Mutunga, but determined to deepen, expand and accelerate judicial reforms,” said Maraga.
He noted that the judiciary is determined to create an institution with strong public confidence, assuring the country that the judiciary is prepared to handle any election petitions that may arise next year.
The CJ said that the judiciary is determined to build a strong and open judiciary calling on political leaders to support the institution.
To deliver this mission, CJ Maraga said, the judiciary would require the financial and political support from the executive and the legislator, both in and out of parliament to secure resources, securing and maintaining the independence of the judiciary.
“This will entail the reduction of case backlog, digitization of Judiciary operations, defending and upholding the Constitution, fighting corruption and improving access to justice.”
Maraga took over from Mutunga who resigned in June last year.
