Two people have been shot dead and two others sustained gunshot wounds after they stormed a police station in Bondo, Siaya County.

Area police boss Paul Kiarie says a crowd stormed the station armed with crude weapons. This happened during anti-IEBC protests. Consequently, the injured were rushed to the Bondo sub-county hospital.

Authorities said that a group of demonstrators, some wielding crude weapons and throwing rocks, converged on the station as part of protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The deputy county police boss confirmed that the shootings left two dead immediately. Several others were also reported injured and taken to the Bondo Sub‑County Hospital for treatment.

The victims were named as Maurice Okumu, aged 31, and Stephen Omondi, aged 23, whose families have since demanded justice and accountability for what they described as unjustified gunfire.

Police defended their actions, with the local station commander asserting that officers had held back until it became clear that the crowd was committed to forcing entry into the station — at which point live rounds were used.

The incident, which occurred in the lead-up to a scheduled presidential rerun, sparked national and international concern over use of force and the protection of protesters’ rights amid heightened political tensions.
