Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday announced that his party Amani National Congress (ANC) was engaged in merger talks with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Speaking at his home in Kakamega County on Sunday, Musalia explained thatย the move was informed by the need for political posterity.

He further told ANC supporters who were against the merger that they had also doubted he would be part of the government when he became a Kenya Kwanza founding member in 2022.

โ€œThere are talks about a merger which is allowed through the Political Parties Act,โ€ Mudavadi stated noting that the provision was to allow parties to come together for the common good.

The PCS, also the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, further added that Kenyans should not be surprised by the merger since political parties also form coalitions which are not very different.

โ€œAzimio and Kenya Kwanza are a coalition of parties and they can be talks for the parties to merge,โ€ he justified the move.

Mudavadi remained coy on whether the resulting merger would see the parties adopt a common name or ANC would be under UDA.

On why ANC was seeking to merge with UDA, Mudavadi hinted it was informed by plans for future political alignments.

โ€œSo when I tell you ANC is in talks for a merger, don’t think it’s something small, we are planning for the future,โ€ he told his supporters.

Mudavadi joined UDA and Ford Kenya to form Kenya Kwanza which later encompassed other political parties.

The PCS did not indicate if Ford Kenya led by National Assemblyย Speaker Moses Wetangula was also part of the merger.

Musalia’s decision to merge with UDA is also happening at a time when cracks have been reported in the ruling party pitting leaders supporting President William Ruto with those aligned to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
