From Kitengela to USA: Catherine Zawadi’s Inspiring Journey

Catherine Zawadi Mutambu grew up in Kitengela with education woven into the fabric of her home. Her mother was a teacher, which meant pressure was constant, and so was performance.

That environment shaped a young woman who moved through school with quiet determination, completing her Bachelor of Commerce in Finance at Kenyatta University in 2021, then blazing through her CPA exams in a single year.

Her career followed the same trajectory; auditor, accountant, then business analyst, each step deliberate, each role building toward something bigger. But Catherine always knew Kenya wasn’t the ceiling.

The obstacle, like it is for most, was money. Six million shillings to study abroad felt impossible. She’d seen the International Scholars Program advertised on TV for years, always telling herself after my degree, after my CPAs, after work. Eventually, the procrastination ran out. In January 2025, she finally walked through ISP’s doors.

What she found was different from every other agency she’d visited. Where others had turned her away, telling her a finance background couldn’t pivot into tech, ISP’s career advisors saw her 3.59 GPA and mapped out a clear path: a Master of Science in Business Analytics and Information Management at the University of Delaware. The acceptance letter arrived two days after submission.

Funding came just as fast. Loan approved in three days. I-20 received. Then came the embassy.

Her first visa interview in June 2025 ended in denial. It was heartbreaking, but it didn’t stop her. She returned in November, walked up to the same officer who had denied her, held her composure when redirected to another window, and delivered a focused, passionate case about using data analytics to combat financial fraud in Kenya.

The officer handed her a white paper, then a yellow one. The passport stayed behind. Days later, she was approved.

Catherine flew Nairobi to Frankfurt to Philadelphia, stepping onto the University of Delaware campus with one clear message for anyone still hesitating:

It’s not easy. But it’s worth it.
