Amazing what Alfred Mutua has done: One month ago, Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium was all sand. In just 4 weeks, red soil was spread on the pitch, grass planted, and now the grass is grown.
Metal stands for the spectators are coming up well and the locker rooms for the players are almost complete.
This is in readiness for the CECAFA tournament, set to begin later this month.
You got to love what Alfred Mutua has done here.
Here’s an aerial shot of the stadium.

The 2013 Revamp: A Kenyan “Old Trafford”
In just four to six weeks, Machakos Stadium was transformed from a bare patch of land into a 10,000-seat, semi-modern venue with a manicured pitch, metal stands, upgraded locker rooms, CCTV, and public facilities — all in preparation for the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
Governor Alfred Mutua showcased an aerial photograph series detailing progress from dry earth to grass and seating in record time.
This accelerated transformation earned the stadium the affectionate nickname “Kenya’s Old Trafford”—a nod to its sudden rise in quality and stature.
Why the “Old Trafford” Label Fits
While Machakos Stadium remains modest in size, the comparison to Manchester United’s iconic ground is symbolic:
Symbolic prestige over capacity: Just as Old Trafford is synonymous with top‑level football in England, Machakos became a symbol of ambition for Kenyan football following its rapid upgrade.
Atmosphere & ambition: The concrete terraces and tight seating resemble a compact, energetic football venue, inviting comparisons to the intense matchday experience at Old Trafford .
Future Focus: FKF’s Technical Centre in Machakos
Recent developments show a shift from symbolic comparisons to long-lasting football infrastructure:
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has partnered with Machakos County to build a National Football Technical Centre, funded by FIFA with $4.5 million (~Sh639 million), on 20 leased acres.
The facility will include three FIFA-standard pitches (one natural grass, two artificial turf), administrative buildings, coach/referee training spaces, athlete accommodation, and medical rooms. Construction is expected to take up to two years.
Groundbreaking was set for mid‑June 2025 and completion projected within two years, positioning Machakos as Kenya’s premier football hub.
Rev 21:4 “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
