Makadara MP Gidion ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi has denied assaulting a police officer and was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail Wednesday.
He denied assaulting the officer during a fracas at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi Monday.
Mr Mbuvi was charged with the offence at the Kibera law courts.
The MP is alleged to have hit a police officer on Monday night after he was barred from the airport’s departure lounge when he went to see off Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mr Kenyatta was departing for the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague where a case in which he is charged with crimes against humanity is coming up for hearing. (READ: Muthaura, Ali and Uhuru to take the stand at ICC).
Reports indicate that police had to stake out at Continental House until the wee hours of Wednesday before they pounced on the MP as he exited the block that houses MPs’ offices. Continental House is part of parliament in whose grounds MPs are protected from arrest.
Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said: "Definitely action will be taken. Once the investigators are through with the file he will be taken to court. We are treating it as an assault case, just like any other.".
