On Sunday, September 25, 2011, Raila Odinga, then Prime Minister of Kenya, visited Minnesota as part of a diplomatic tour of the United States.
During his visit, he delivered a public address at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
The event was organized by the International Leadership Institute and the Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice. Odinga was accompanied by several Kenyan county governors, including Ali Hassan Joho of Mombasa County.
The gathering was well-attended by members of the Kenyan-American community in Minnesota, reflecting Odinga’s strong support among the diaspora.
The visit was part of a broader U.S. tour that included stops in Chicago and Buffalo, New York.
In Chicago, Odinga spoke at a Global Business Coalition meeting, and in Buffalo, he delivered a commencement address at the State University of New York at Buffalo’s Law School.
This tour marked his first visit to the U.S. following the election of President Barack Obama, whose father was Kenyan. However, there were no confirmed meetings between Odinga and President Obama during this trip.
Odinga’s Minnesota visit was also notable for his book signing event, where he introduced his autobiography, The Flame of Freedom.
The book, published by Mountain Top Publishers, covers his early life, political career, and experiences during his years in detention.
The event was attended by members of the Kenyan-American community, and Odinga took the opportunity to discuss his political journey and the importance of devolution in Kenya.
