Divisions between the IEBC and Kenyans living abroad have emerged following the commissions recent visit to the US to consult with the Diaspora on how Kenyans living abroad are likely to vote in next year’s general elections.

Recent developments have highlighted growing tensions between Kenya’s diaspora community and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), particularly concerning voter registration and representation.

Key Issues Raised by the Diaspora

Voter Registration Challenges: The IEBC’s limited establishment of only three polling stations in the United States has led to widespread dissatisfaction among Kenyans abroad.

Diplomats, including Ambassadors Elkanah Odembo and Macharia Kamau, have expressed disappointment over the lack of clear guidelines and the insufficient number of registration centers, which they believe may disenfranchise many eligible voters.

Representation in Parliament: A petition supported by over 100 diaspora leaders from regions such as North and South America, Europe, and Asia advocates for the entrenchment of Constituency 291 into law.

This would ensure permanent representation for the diaspora in Kenya’s National Assembly and Senate, addressing concerns that without legal backing, the constituency could be overlooked in future boundary reviews.

Calls for IEBC Reconstitution: The prolonged delay in reconstituting the IEBC has led to petitions demanding immediate action. Critics argue that the current IEBC’s dysfunctionality undermines the electoral process, with some diaspora groups warning of potential legal challenges if the situation persists.

Diaspora’s Demands

Expansion of Voting Centers: Establish more polling stations abroad to accommodate the large number of registered voters.

Use of National IDs for Registration: Allow Kenyans to register using their national identification cards, as many have not renewed their passports.

Legal Recognition of Constituency 291: Formalize Constituency 291 to guarantee diaspora representation in future elections.

Enhanced Voter Education: Implement comprehensive programs to inform the diaspora about the voting process and their rights.

How to Support the Petition

Individuals interested in supporting the diaspora’s call for reform can sign the petition demanding the reconstitution of the IEBC. This petition is available on Change.org and has garnered significant attention from both Kenyan citizens and international observers.

The diaspora community’s active engagement underscores their commitment to ensuring fair and inclusive electoral processes, reflecting their significant contributions to Kenya’s development.
