Former United States top diplomat for african affairs Jendayi Frazer has criticized Johnie Carson, the man who succeeded her for the position, accusing him of meddling in Kenyan affairs.
Carson, who is the assistant secretary for african affairs had warned that Kenyans would suffer the consequences for their choices in the election. But Frazer noted that Carson’s statement was misguided and said that the ICC is not a legitimate institution as it was manipulated by the west.
Jendayi Frazer criticize Ambassador Johnnie Carson
Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer, has publicly criticized Ambassador Johnnie Carson for his remarks regarding Kenya’s 2013 presidential election.
Carson, who served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs under President Obama, warned Kenyans that their choice of president could have “consequences,” a statement Frazer deemed “reckless and irresponsible.”
She argued that such comments amounted to interference in Kenya’s domestic affairs and were unwarranted, given that the International Criminal Court (ICC) case against Uhuru Kenyatta was based on unproven allegations and lacked solid evidence.
Frazer further contended that the U.S. and European nations were playing a “dangerous game” by delaying recognition of Kenyatta’s presidency.
She warned that this approach could alienate Kenya and push it closer to China, which had already extended diplomatic recognition to Kenyatta.
Frazer’s criticism highlights a broader debate over the appropriate level of foreign involvement in Kenya’s electoral processes and the potential geopolitical ramifications of such interventions.
