IEBC rejects Kalonzo’s vote tinkering claim

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 – The Independent, Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected claims by the CORD alliance that some of the presidential results released in some areas far exceed the number of registered voters.

IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan told journalists on Thursday evening that the IEBC verification team would have automatically detected the anomaly and cancelled such results.

He added that the commission had not received any written complaints from the alliance to stop the collation and would continue tallying and announcing the presidential results before a winner is declared on Friday.

“Where results are declared in excess of the total number of registered voters, by law that is an automatic cancellation of results and we don’t have them,” he stressed.

“The chairman of the commission is the Returning Officer for presidential results; any issues should be addressed to the chairperson in writing before the final declaration of results,” he added.

The CORD alliance had listed Wajir North and Runyenjes constituencies among those that allegedly had results exceeding the number of registered voters.

Interestingly, the IEBC announced the results from Wajir North constituency after the allegations by the CORD alliance because while the coalition made the claims on Thursday around noon, the IEBC announced the results on Thursday evening.

Verification by Capital FM News shows numbers of the two constituencies add up.

Hassan maintained that the commission’s verification process was water tight and would not allow for doctoring of any results.

“I don’t know the results of this election; I don’t know how they are going to turn out. I did not vote in this election and neither did the Commissioners,” he argued.

“This commission is committed to honouring its oath. The results you’re seeing are of the people you elected,” he added.

He further observed that the IEBC had been providing all party agents with the outcome of the results for purposes of enhancing transparency and credibility.

Hassan added that it was impossible to hack the IEBC systems to access or tamper with data from the elections.

“I do not believe the system was hacked as we installed a multilayer security. The Commission authenticated the results that are being released and they are legally determined,” he said.

He also refuted claims that there was in fighting among the Commission’s senior staff saying they were fully united and committed to the task at hand.

By 6pm on Thursday, the commission had declared results from 134 constituencies, which indicated that Jubilee presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta was still leading with 3,152,486 votes against CORD’s presidential candidate Raila Odinga with 2,580,302 votes.

Two hundred and sixty one Returning Officers have so far made their way to the Bomas of Kenya.
