Ruiru, Kenya: Mystery surrounds the attack of IEBC offices on Friday night in Ruiru Town by suspected thugs who escaped with a BVR machine, crucial electoral documents and a gun.
An Administration Police officer who was on duty was attacked and tied before being robbed of a G3 rifle.
A team of police officers has since been sent to the area to commence investigations into the incident. Police say the attack took place past midnight on Friday.
According to officers who visited the scene, the motive of the incident was to get hold of the BVR machine and the electoral materials.
“We believe the thieves wanted to escape with the materials which are crucial in many ways. The stealing of the gun was a by the way,” said an officer.
Central head of CID Henry Ondiek says they have commenced investigations into the attack but they are yet to make any arrest or recovery.
“We are pursuing various angles into the incident and we hope to make an arrest and recovery,” he said.
Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo is set to address the issue later on Saturday.
All IEBC offices are usually guarded by police since the end of the general election. It is not clear how the officer and his colleague were attacked.
