Word of the Day: Change your WordsWe cannot avoid noise, air, and land pollution as everybody suffers this problem yet we contribute to it in some way or another. Indeed pollution takes many forms but there is one type that is often overlooked by many of us. This is verbal pollution. It could be in form of grumbling, complaining or constantly criticizing. In fact the poison of pessimism creates an atmosphere of negativism whereby nothing but the bad side of everything is emphasized.
A group of Christian friends became concerned about this form of pollution and decided to do something about it in their lives. These friends made a pact to avoid critical words for a whole week and they were surprised to find out how little they spoke! As they continued with this experiment of speaking positive words, they realized they had to relearn conversation skills.
If we want to be rid of verbal pollution we must deliberately choose to rely on God to be our help. One book of the Bible that talks a lot about oneโs words is the book of Proverbs. You can start by reading a chapter from the book of Proverbs daily alongside your quiet time Bible study and put into practice the principles picked. Today, aim to change your words, because words are powerful as they can either build or destroy.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29
