When we receive compliments, we feel a warm inner glow that makes us feel good and confident. This happens especially when we receive a sincere compliment because of something we have done. By finding pleasure in being commended, we allow others to exercise their gift of encouragement because their words can uplift our spirits.24
By exercising the gift of encouragement by complimenting others, we also show that pride has not gained the upper hand in our lives. A proud person is so preoccupied with himself that he doesn’t notice what others do and has no desire to compliment them.
Give people a pat on the back when they deserve it by complimenting them when they do well. However, let it be from the heart and not out of obligation. Remember also that you don’t have to feel guilty about feeling good when someone compliments you.
“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
