Autopsy shows Nkaissery died of a heart attack

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 10 – The late Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery died of a heart attack.

Results of a post-mortem conducted on Monday showed no evidence of foul play, family pathologists said.

The post-mortem was conducted by the government pathologist in the presence of two family pathologists, two family doctors, the family lawyer and a family member.

Dr Bykakika Bissie, the family pathologist told journalists that Nkaissery “suffered an acute fatal heart attack as a result of a compromised blood vessel to the heart.”

The pathologist explained that “he had a sudden onset fatal heart attack. This arose because one of the major blood vessels supplying the wall of his heart was severely compromised and could only allow a very small volume of blood to pass through it, resulting in the heart area that is supplied to undergo death. Because of this, the electronic activity of the heart was compromised and death ensued.”

According to the family doctor Charles Kariuki, the condition was caused by “in most common situations, the sudden occlusion of an already narrowed artery usually due to a tiny blood clot.”

Such conditions, he said, are likely to attack older people, more so males.

The condition, according to the pathologists, can also be caused by blood pressure and other lifestyle related diseases.

Though further tests are going to be carried out, Dr Bissie said so far there was no evidence of foul play.

“There is absolutely no evidence seen by us that there was any indication of foul play,” she asserted.

Also present during the post-mortem was Dr Andrew Gachie representing the family, and Nairobi CID Chief Nicholas Kamwende.

The news came as it emerged Nkaissery’s widow had left the hospital after she was admitted following his death.

Meanwhile, the joint funeral organising committee has set this Saturday as the date of burial at his Bisil home in Kajiado County.

Before then, the committee chaired by Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu said, “there will be a memorial service on Thursday, the 13th of July 2017 at the Nairobi Baptist Church along Ngong road.

The service begins, at 9:30am and is open to the public. Members of the public are advised to be seated by 8:30am.”

Kenyans will have a chance to express their condolences messages starting Tuesday at KICC, the Nairobi Baptist Church and all 47 county headquarters according to a statement by family spokesman Saitoti ole Maika.

Nkaissery was a Member of Parliament until 2014 when he resigned to take up President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointment as Interior Cabinet Secretary to replace Joseph ole Lenku who was replaced in the wake of increased insecurity in the country.

Nkaissery joined politics in 2002 when he retired from the military at the rank of Major-General, having served for 29 years.

He was then elected Member of Parliament in 2007, and was later appointed Assistant Minister for Internal Security by former President Mwai Kibaki in 2008-2013.

He was elected to Parliament on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket before he fell out with the party leader Raila Odinga when he joined President Kenyatta’s government.
