Kenyans among thousands stranded in Bali after Mt Agung eruption

Two Kenyans are stranded at the Indonesian resort island of Bali following flights disruptions due to an ash cloud from the Mt Agung volcano.

They are among thousands of passengers.

Serah Katusya, managing director of MediaCom East Africa who is in Bali with a friend, said the only alternate route out of the Island is a nine-hour road journey to Jakarta.

“We were meant to leave three days ago but the airport remains closed. The only route travel agents are recommending is a seven-hour road trip, then 45 minutes in a ferry to an airport at Surabaya where we can take a flight to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta.

“That’s where the airline says we have hope of leaving to Dubai.”

Bali’s airport has been closed for days with no hope of operations anytime soon as the volcano spewed massive ash clouds.

Katusya travelled to Ubud, Lovina and finally Seminyak in Bali with her friend but they have not been able to leave the city.

Scientists say Mt Agung’s volcanic activity could escalate further over the coming days, meaning planes could stay grounded with thousands unable to fly in or out of Bali.

Denpasar Airport remains closed. The normally bustling airport was a ghost town on Monday night, speckled with confused tourists left stranded by the cancellation of flights because of volcanic ash.

Indonesia had raised its alert for the volcano to the highest level, warning of the “imminent” risk of a larger eruption.

Frustrated travellers continue to wait for communication from different airlines, with many now opting for road and water travel to get to Jakarta and eventually to Dubai.

MediaCom Indonesia is assisting the team to secure a travel agency that will provide a plan to leave Bali.
