Ugandans worried about the number of Chinese men marrying their women

Ugandan immigration officials are not at ease over an influx of Chinese men marrying Ugandan women to gain residency in the country.

According to Quartz Africa, sham marriages were on the rise as the Chinese businessmen men sought to marry Ugandan women in order to continue their business interests in the country.

Immigration officials who appeared before a parliamentary committee early this month stated that cases of Chinese-Ugandan couples was on the rise.

The officials added that the unions were rising parallel to the increase of factories and retail shops selling imported Chinese goods.

“But we have many who are marrying and even producing… Even our Ugandan women are accepting to [reproduce] with these men,” an immigration official was quoted by Quartz Africa as saying.

There are between 10,000 and 50,000 Chinese nationals in Uganda.
