Five people dead in New Years eve grenade attack

Five people died while others were injured on New Years eve after Al-Shabaab suspects hurled a grenade to revelers who had gathered at local club in Garissa town to welcome the New Year.
The suspected Al-Shabaab militants also opened fire on guards manning the club before they fled on foot through Bula Sheikh residential area where they also shot an Administration police officer who died on his way to hospital.
The injured were rushed to Garrissa General Hospital where they are recovering.
The North Eastern Provincial Director of Medical Services Dr.Mukhar Omar confirmed the incident which took place at mid night.
Residents were left wondering how it escaped the eye of security agents as the raided   Locus Night club is situated only 100 meters away  from the  area Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons Offices.
Efforts to reach the area Security chiefs proofed futile as they were  said out trailing the militants who are still at large.
Junior police officers said they were not allowed to make any comment on the incident which has caused fear and tension in the town.
The ill fated  club known to locals as ‘Ngamia Club’ is common with civil servants and aid workers.
Meanwhile Internal Security Minister George Saitoti has warned all those bent on causing chaos during this electioneering year will be dealt with them firmly.
Speaking after attending a New Year mass at the Holy Family Minor Basilica in Nairobi, Saitoti said that unlike the 2007 general elections, the government has put in place proper security apparatus to deal with insecurity.
He also warned those seeking elective positions against use of violence in their campaigns, adding that they will not be spared by the law.
