President Kibaki has congratulated Uhuru Kenyatta for his victory in elections called to pick his successor.
The President who is leaving office after serving two five-year terms, wished the president-elect success as he prepared to take over leadership.
“To Honourable Uhuru Kenyatta who has been declared President Elect by the IEBC, I express my most sincere congratulations. I wish him best wishes, success and Godโs blessings in the noble duty of governing our great country,” he said in a statement.
President Kibaki said he was happy with the way IEBC conducted the โmost diverse and intense general election in our nationโs historyโ.
“I commend the entire Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, led by the Chairman Isaack Hassan for their diligence and commitment.ย I also salute our security officials and public servants for their vigilance, hard work and sacrifice,” President Kibaki said.
He thanked Kenyans for their patience as the IEBC tallied votes after Monday’s election.
“I heartily commend you for exhibiting a great degree of tolerance and patience. I thank you for heeding to my call that we should conduct ourselves in a manner that shows that our democracy has come of age. The peaceful conducting of elections is a victory for Kenya.
“By casting your votes you exercised your democratic right and lived up to your date with destiny. Across our country we have a new crop of leaders who will see to it that we have functional governments at both the county and national levels.”
The President also promised to oversee a smooth transmission of power to the new president. He at the same time encouraged those who were satisfied with the outcome to seek redress in the right institutions.
“On my part, I commit myself to the management of a smooth transition to the new leadership that the Kenyan people have placed in office. We have credible institutions that should deal with any matter that may have arisen during the electoral process.
“In the meantime, I appeal to Kenyans to be peaceful and calm and allow for any disputes that may have arisen to be resolved within the legal mechanismโฆ after the elections, let us all embrace one another in the spirit of one Kenya one nation. Let us immediately get down to the work of entrenching the economic, social and democratic gains that our nation has made,” President Kibaki said.
