How dependable are we? Do those around us believe that we are a people of our words or do we make empty promises?
The bible encourages us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry but most times we end up doing the opposite. We say words and make promises that we either struggle to keep or all together abandon them.
In Judges Chapter 11 Jephthah made a promise that if the LORD gave him victory against the Ammonites he would sacrifice whatever came out of his door as a burnt offering.
Now the LORD gave him victory and when he went home his only child came out to meet him.
Jephthah out rightly cried out in misery and wretchedness because he had to sacrifice his only child as a burnt offering but because he had made a vow to the LORD he had to keep to it.
This is a good example of how keen we should be with the promises we make. Dependability is following through your word and commitment no matter how tough it is however, to avoid disappointing others think through what you say.
This means that people can count on you and the best part is you too can count on yourself. Therefore be a person who is both dependable and reliable in all you do.
“Whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD’s and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”
Judges 11:31
