Word of the Day: To Lead You Must Follow

Word of the Day: To Lead You Must Follow

For most employers when they are hiring somebody, they look for an apprentice; a person who is willing and ready to learn. In the Bible a good example of an apprentice is Joshua. Joshua before becoming a great leader amongst the Israelites literally shadowed under Moses for 40 years as Mosesโ€™ assistant, aide and apprentice. He also had some important responsibilities as a spy and as a warrior.

Joshua observed Moses at all angles, he learnt what it meant to be humble, how to take instruction and most importantly how to be a true servant of God. Even a display of Moses losing his temper was an opportunity for Joshua to learn and not repeat the same mistake when in leadership. Overall, Joshua learned things that couldnโ€™t be learned from a book.

In the same way that Joshua was prepared by training and learning under Moses, God also takes His own time to prepare us for service. Sometimes that period of waiting and learning is one where we are being sharpened, chiseled and molded so as to be what God intends us to be in His service. Finally, a person who is not willing to follow is not prepared to lead.

“No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Joshua 1:5
