KAKAMEGA, KENYA:ย Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has criticized the move by United Nations Security Council to reject Kenyaโ€™s quest for deferral of ICC cases facing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

Atwoli said Kenyans made a strong statement when they elected Uhuru and Ruto therefore UNSCโ€™s decision was in bad faith.

โ€œThe UNSCโ€™s failure to show commitment to support Kenyaโ€™s deferral quest is a clear indication that they donโ€™t have our interests at heart. Turning down Kenyaโ€™s request was unwise. Uhuru should ignore UNSC and continue with building the nation,โ€™โ€™ he noted.

He urged Uhuru and Ruto not to despair stating that a solution to the deferral bid could still be attained. He added their biggest mandate is to govern

Speaking at Chakalini Secondary School in Lugari during a fundraising, Atwoli advised President Uhuru not to attend to the ICC sermons and instead stated that he should stick around and execute his mandate.

โ€œUhuru should not go anywhere as Kenyans gave them the mandate to lead and spur our development. No one should frustrate Kenya because it can sustain itself,โ€™โ€™ he observed.

Lugari MP Ayub Savula said that since the UNSC route had failed a new strategy must be found and Uhuru and Ruto should just take up the armour and go and defend themselves.

Savula added that he hopes the cases would come to a logical conclusion.

โ€œI urged Kenyans to prayer for the two leaders and Kenya as a whole. A new strategy must be formed soon in order for the country to move forward,โ€™โ€™ stated Savula.

Africa Union leaders led by Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya have been pushing for Kenya ICC deferral for a year.

On Friday, UNSC rejected Kenyaโ€™s request whereby Russia and China voted for a draft resolution to approve the move. Eight members namely United States, Britain, Guatemala, Luxembourg, Argentina, Australia, Republic of Korea and France refrained.
