NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 19 โ The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has postponed two political rallies scheduled to take place in Kisii and Nakuru on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The Kisii rally will now take place on July 4 at the Gusii Stadium.
โA rally scheduled for Nakuru on Sunday has also been cancelled in honour of the victims of the terror attacks in Mpeketoni, Lamu County. Instead of the rally, CORD is asking its supporters and Kenyans in general wherever they are to dedicate Sunday June 22, 2014 to prayers for peace, security and unity in the country,โ Odingaโs Personal Assistant Dennis Onyango indicated.
CORD postponed the Kisii rally after a plea by local leaders.
โThis follows a request by the local leaders who said they needed enough time to concentrate on the crucial by-election in Bonchari which will be held next Monday (June 23, 2014),โ CORD Communications Director Philip Etale explained.
CORD leader Raila Odinga was on Thursday in Kisii where he led campaigns for their candidate, Oroo Oyioka.
CORD has planned a series of rallies that are expected to culminate on a major rally on Saba Saba Day (July 7) in Nairobi.
On Wednesday, Odinga said the political rallies would continue as planned until the government agrees to calls for national dialogue.
He said the Sunday attack in Mpeketoni was one of the reasons why there should be national dialogue to address insecurity issues among other key problems the country is facing.
He has distanced the coalition from the attacks, saying thorough investigation should be done and those found culpable arrested and prosecuted in a court of law.
Odinga said it was wrong for the government to maintain the attack was politically instigated yet there were reports that Al Shabaab had admitted responsibility.
