Celebrated Kenyan actor Derek Amunga, who has been missing since July 25, has been confirmed dead.
Mr Amunga became popular in the 90s when he acted as a street urchin in the Kenyan local soap ‘Tausi’. He played the role of Master Sugu.
Mr Amunga has been on and off stage and silver screen ever since.
News about his disappearance has been circulating in the social media for the past one week.
Confirming the death, his housemate and fellow actor Shem Odhiambo Agunga, told the Daily Nation shortly after viewing his body at the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary on Sunday, that post-mortem is yet to be done to establish the cause of his death.
“I have gone with his family members to the mortuary twice today (Sunday) and we have confirmed it is his body,” said Mr Agunga.
He also said that according to records, the body was taken to the mortuary on July 28.
According to Mr Agunga, the deceased has been off the acting scene for a while until a few months ago.
“He had gone to his rural home in Kakamega to re-strategize on his acting career,” said Mr Agunga.
“We told him to come back to Nairobi since the theatre industry has improved, and when he finally did, I hosted him in my house.”
His last job was a role he played in the play ‘Trapped’ staged at Alliance Francaise, Nairobi, two weeks ago.
