Kenyan Students Win Scholarships to Study At Chinese Science College
Twelve Kenyan students were on Wednesday awarded scholarships by Chinese Ambassador Liu Xianfa. They will undertake masters training at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences international college.
The students are drawn from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and the National Museums of Kenya. They will begin the three-year graduate programme in September.
Speaking during the ceremony at JKUAT, Ambassador Liu said the scholarships are part of a cooperation between China and Kenya towards fostering integration between the two countries, through higher education.
He said the Embassy is committed to see the establishment of China-Africa Centre for Research and Education and a Botanical Garden at JKUAT, in partnership with Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Education PS Belio Kipsang, in a speech read by James Kiburi, said the scholarships will improve biodiversity management in Kenya. JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof Mabel Imbuga said the university has set aside 40 acres where the centre to host eight research laboratories will be established.
Imbuga thanked the Chinese government for the scholarships. A team of experts has been together to work on concepts towards the botanical garden.
Veronica Ngumabu, one of the beneficiaries, who will study taxonomy, said she hopes to attain best skills in the field. The move to establish the centre is in line with vision 2030 and the African Union consolidated plan for science and technology, Kipsang said.
