Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko hasย paid a Sh100,000ย fine for a 100-year-old woman who was handed a three-month jail sentence for contempt.
Ngima Gakoromo had been ordered to pay a fine of Sh100,00 or spend three months in prison by Embu resident Judge Florence Muchemi last week after she and her two sons defied a court order in a 18-year old land dispute. Ngima failed to raise the fine and was sent to prison Officials from the Sonko rescue team which had earlier indicated through its twitter handle that they were enroute to the prison, received Gakoromo as she emerged from the prison gates following her release.
Ngima and herย sons Njue Gakoromo, 70, and Angelo Gakoromo, 50, were sent to prison last week for contempt of court. They ignored a court order to allocate a two-acre parcel to Justa Wawira who has been demanding a share of the familyโs four acres. Wawiraโs father lived on a part of the land and is said to have claimed a share before he died.
The two families are not related and Wawiraโs father is said to have leased part of the land. Embu resident judge Florence Muchemi ordered the grandmother to pay a fine of Sh100,000 or spend three months in prison. Njue and Angelo were each sentenced to six months in jail without the option of paying a fine.
