Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula saved Budalangโi MP Ababu Namwamba from the attempt to remove him as chair of a parliamentary committee.
Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale said Wetang’ula held seven meetings with members of the Public Accounts Committee and urged them to back off.
Last Thursday, Namwamba survived a vote to remove him over claims he receives bribes to change the committee’s reports. Wetang’ula saved Ababu says Khalwale
Khalwale urged Namwamba to do his job and ensure public resources are used for development and to uplift the lives of Kenyans.
He cited himself as an example, saying many politicians and bureaucrats accused of graft attempted to bribe him in the last Parliament but failed because he does not take bribes.
Khalwale was speaking during the burial of Mzee Jacob Keya, 101, at Elwesero village in Kakamega county on Saturday.
Keya is the father of former Lurambi MP Atanas Manyala.
UDF leader Musalia Mudavadi asked MPs to restore Parliament’s honour.
He said reports indicating that most parliamentary committees have been compromised are disturbing.
Mudavadi said this has never happened in the history of Parliament.
โWe are asking MPs to stand firm in discharging their mandate to Kenyans,โ he said.
Khalwale said the Senate PAC, which he chairs, will recommend that senior members of the Kakamega government, MCAs and other officials be surcharged the Sh11,718,900 they receive monthly in unjustified allowances.
โIt is in the Auditor General and Controller of Budget reports. We shall make a recommendation and it will be effected so that all the money may be recovered,โ he said.
