In what has become the norm in the country for action to be taken, a man has chained himself outside Kenyatta National Hospital protesting lack of medical equipment.

David Wanjohi is reported to have come into the facility just like any other patient on Tuesday morning and went on to chain himself on the neck to a tree outside the emergency unit.

The protester also set up banners that proclaim the urgent need for more radio therapy machines for cancer patients at the referral hospital.

Another banner announces a hunger strike that Wanjohi has started to rally support for the purchase of the equipment.

RADIOTHERAPY

Radiotherapy treatment at the hospital had been suspended for a week in March this year after the only two radiotherapy machines at the facility broke down.

One of the machines was repaired and treatment resumed though some of the patients had to wait longer for their treatment as the repaired machine was more suited to offer radiotherapy to cervical and prostate cancer patients.

KNH Chief Executive Lily Koros Tare at the time said the government was in the process of procuring an additional machine that would be operational starting June.

Radiotherapy, which is required treatment for a staggering 80 per cent of all cancer cases, is offered only at one public hospital, KNH, at a cost of Sh500 per session.
