ODM Nakuru branch chairman shoots at journalists

Six Nakuru journalists on Friday escaped death by a whisker after an enraged ODM party branch chairman shot at them.

The journalists had gone to the controversial Ojlorai settlement scheme in Gilgil to cover a land dispute when Peter Ole Osono opened fire.

They had gone to find out if a public road that had been closed down by politician was opened as directed by the National Land Commission.

NLC chairman Dr Muhammad Swazuri told Nakuru County Commissioner to immediately open the road since its closure was greatly inconveniencing hundreds of school children.

On Tuesday this week, Dr Swazuri had toured the county to collect grievances when Oljorai residents told him that they children had to walk an extra 3 kilometre to access school after the Mr Sono closed the road.

On Friday, the journalists went to the farm to find out if the orders had been implemented only to be accosted by Mr Osono who was accompanied by a group of armed youths.

During the campaigns ahead of the 2002 General Elections, Mr Osono was involved in another shooting incident when he shot in the air in a confrontation between him and the supporters of an opponent.
